Mandi Remington for Supervisor

My name is Mika Jayne Covington and my pronouns are she/her.

I, like Mandi, understand the struggle of being part of the working class and we know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck. I understand what it’s like to worry about losing my home because of the ever-increasing rent in Johnson County.

Mandi is a single parent, a domestic violence survivor, and a non-profit leader. She is dedicated to making sure everyone has their basic human needs met, including affordable housing, healthcare, childcare, and food security.

As a rare disease patient and nonprofit leader of Next Generation of Cystinosis, I support Mandi. Because I know that she is committed to removing barriers to healthcare.

Not only am I a rare disease patient but I am a trans woman. I cannot separate my being trans from also living with a rare disease.

As a trans woman, I’ve fought back against the state, including when I had to take the Iowa Department of Health to court to gain access to my gender-affirming surgery last year. I’ve also been discriminated against in 2012 when I was trying to get a kidney transplant in Nebraska.

Now, despite this victory for trans people on Medicaid, trans and non-binary youth are banned from getting needed gender-affirming care. For me, it’s been devastating to watch Iowa, my adoptive home, take away civil rights from my community.

Mandi is a democrat who not only talks the talk but walks it.

In February, she stood up to fellow democrats at the Johnson County Democrats Central Committee meeting and demanded that as democrats we support censuring elected democratic officials when their actions harm people, such as the seven trans and nonbinary people charged for fighting for their rights and against hate on campus.

We need someone who has the guts to stand up for us!

Mandi knows our community! She won’t stop doing the most good for us!
